Keen Grafton golfers play on in the heat and humidity

Although the main golfing program has finished for the year, Grafton women golfers are still playing competitions through December and January. Thank you to Bendigo Bank, which is sponsoring the Women’s Summer Consistency, where the best 12 from 25 games count.

However, despite the golfers being keen to continue, during the past week the heat and humidity have resulted in reduced numbers competing in the 18-hole competitions.

On Monday December 2 the popular 9-hole competition had to be cancelled as the course was closed due to the continued wet weather and the waterlogged ground. Later in the week the course was re-opened but with restrictions on where carts could be safely driven.

On Wednesday December 4, 34 golfers teed off in the 18-hole Stableford which was Round 8 of the Summer Consistency. The heat and humidity meant conditions were very uncomfortable.

The Div 1 winner was Elaine Shand (35); r/up was Jen Townsend (33c/b); third was Millie Harris (33c/b).

In Div 2 the winner was Jan Pilgrim (32); r/up was Di Chapman (31c/b); third was Di Alderman (31c/b).

NTP on the 10th was Di Chapman, second shot on the 10th was Jan Davis, and NTP on the 17th was Elaine Shand.

Balls were won by Kaye Murdoch, Vivienne Nichols, Heather Purtill, Chrissy Danvers, Lisa Hunt, Wendy Butcher, Peg James and Cheryl Creighton.

On Friday December 6 there was no golf dedicated just to women due to the running of the annual Tradies Day.

On Saturday December 7 the weather was again VERY hot and humid, and consequently the number of participants was lower than usual. They played an 18-hole Stableford, and it was Round 9 of the Bendigo Bank Summer Consistency.

The winner was Lisa Hunt (37); r/up was Heather Purtill (33); third was Sue Petty (32).

NTP was determined by a draw of the cards and was won by Lisa Hunt. Bravo to all those who stuck it out and completed their rounds in the difficult conditions.

During Summer the women’s competition games will be teeing off from 7.30am due to the heat, which is expected later in the day, and will be played right through to the end of 2024, except for Christmas Day.
