Julies vision for Harwood

Harwood Island resident Julie Young has lived in the village of Harwood for around 53 years.

Julie said that she was very pleased with Wednesday’s community drop-in session and information that was on display.

“I do believe that we need a cultural centre, so that we can show all our historical documents that our dedicated local historians Ros Ryan and Kathleen Werry have been collecting over the years,” Julie said.

“I’m also very concerned that we retain our tugboat, “The Beardmore”, which has a Gardiner engine in it and was built here in Harwood.

“There have been others looking to acquire it, but we want it to be able to stay here in Harwood and we hope to have it displayed, perhaps underneath the bridge.

“We also need some toilets and a community centre.

“Our first priority was to try and get an area (a cultural centre) built out over the water, where the local indigenous community could display their culture – that was what we were hoping for.

“But all in all, it’s coming along well,” she said.
