Jack Sheean takes Tooheys Herron Cup

Weekend competition

One of our feature golfing events of the year, the 36 hole Tooheys Herron Cup was held last weekend, and attracted a quality field of players who produced a very high standard of golf.

The Herron Cup, which is determined by handicap, was won this year by Jack Sheean (16) with two round of 70 and 68 for a total of 138 nett.  With a total nett score of 142, Graham Tracey (10) was the eventual r/up in the cup with rounds of 76 on Saturday, storming home on Sunday with an outstanding 66 nett to just fall short of claiming the Cup.

In the Grafton Bowl, which is decided on the gross results, Matt McKee (plus 1) for the second year in succession won the Grafton Bowl with gross scores of 74 and 74 totalling 148 to claim the win. With a par round of 72 on Sunday, Greg Harvison (plus 1) had to settle for the r/up spot in the bowl, his Sunday effort not helped by his opening Saturday score of 77 hits, which was way below his normal high standard of golf.

With almost 30 major trophies on offer over the 36 holes, there are too many winners to list in this report. For your convenience a complete list of all the various trophy winners is up on the notice board.  For the record, pro-balls were awarded to those with 77 on a countback on Saturday and 74 or better on Sunday.

Should you have been one of those trophy winners, just contact Club Captain, David Morgan, who will arrange getting your trophy to you.

This was the 53rd year that the Herron Cup has been part of our golfing schedule and with the support of both our sponsors, such as Tooheys, and the support of all golfers, the Herron Cup is more than assured of a long and successful future.

Coming events

The Stroke format of golf continues this coming Saturday with the July monthly mug on offer sponsored by Grafton Ally Fabrication through the courtesy of Tony Blackadder and Jason O’Grady. Tony and Jason have been supporters of Grafton golf for many years, Tony being one of our more talented golfers, it seems forever.

Following on from the monthly mug, on the following Saturday July 24, the O’Donohue/Hann and Associates 18 hole four person Texas Scramble is to be held. This event was originally scheduled for Saturday July 31, but has been brought forward, with the Tim Newsome single Stableford, originally set down for that date put back to July 31. For those golfers involved with mixed golf, a reminder that on Sunday July 25, the 27 hole mixed foursomes championships will be held. Nominations for that event now open.

Veteran golf

As most Veterans would be aware the Women’s Golf Northern Rivers Annual Tournament is to be held on Tuesday July 20. As a result, there will be no competition for Veterans on that particular day. However to compensate for no golf on that day the Veterans competition has been transferred to Thursday July 22.

Meanwhile, the Coopers Brewery sponsored Top Gun shootout qualifying leader board continues to change with Dek Pabian continuing to hold the leading position on 43 points. John Tracey follows on 42 with Neil Hayward and Eddie Clack next in line with 41 & 40 points respectively. They are followed by six players all on 39, Ken Radunz, Stephen Hancock, Steve Houlahan, Darryl Berry, David Morgan and Leon McPhee. The 10th spot currently held by Jeff Hackett with 38.

Still plenty of time remaining for those in the top 10 to improve their current position or anyone not on the leader board to force their way into that group. The final for the shootout to be held on Sunday October 10.
