Iris Vincent, a resident at Mareeba Aged Care in Maclean, celebrated her 100th birthday last weekend. Iris’s five children, Marjorie Jarrett, Grahame Vincent, Bob Vincent, Ken Vincent and Jean Brandis, their partners and several of her grandchildren and great grandchildren travelled from Sydney, Macksville, Murwillumbah, Crows Nest (Qld) and Brisbane to celebrate the occasion. Granddaughter Lynette Jarrett expressed her family’s thanks to all those who have given their care and attention to Iris over the years, both at Mareeba and while living at Palmers Island. Born on June 19, 1915 at Waratah, Newcastle NSW, and raised in Newcastle, Niagara Park and Dundas, Iris married Sidney Vincent in 1933 at Rydalmere. They had an orchard and poultry farm at Rydalmere before moving to another orchard at Kenthurst. They retired to Palmers Island in the late 1970s. Iris was an active member of the garden club, the Uniting Church and other community organisations, and assisted many of her elderly neighbours. She lived in her own home at Palmers Island into her mid 90s, at which time she moved to Mareeba Aged Care. She received congratulatory letters from the Queen, Prime Minister, Premier, several government representatives and other dignitaries.
