Lady Veteran members enjoying the 19th hole and fellowship after the shotgun start (l-r) Patricia Freeman, Joan Leader, Kate Brims and Laurice Poore. We warmly welcome the four ladies to our Veterans competition days and invite all other Iluka ladies to come and enjoy the Vets golf days. Be brave and give the guys a run for the money.

Iluka Veterans – Ron Green Memorial Trophy

Last week’s event was a Single Stableford with a great field bolstered by four lady members of the Vets (who can now play on equal terms against the men). Played in overcast conditions with the threat of rain, the weather cooperated and was enjoyed by all. We could see that our maestro greenkeeper, Doug Turner has been active on some Greens, driving in deep spike holes to improve drainage in some spots which will undoubtedly rectify a few problem areas.

The 9.30am shotgun start is proving to be more popular and ensures good support and comradery at the presentation; great to see so many Veterans enjoying themselves.

Sponsoring the Ron Green Memorial Trophy was the Freeman family for the 21st year. A remarkable tribute to a great guy warmly remembered by many of our Veterans and a big thank you to Patricia and Gary Freeman for continuing the legacy all this time for Patricia’s father Ron Green.

Overall winner was Paul Mitchell, who blew the field away with a staggering 45 points. On receiving the award from Patricia Freeman, Paul noted that his father (Eric) was a good friend of Ron Green, which made the award and the shield more personal.

Runner up was Frank Poore with a great 40 points, and Frank said he could fondly remember playing with an aging Ron Green, who upon driving the ball would immediately spin around and ask, “Where did that go?” For Frank the wheel has turned a full circle as he now spins around after every shot with the same question.

Results

NTP’s: 1 / 10 – Gordon Farrell; 6 /15 – Jim Lowe; 8 / 17 – Jack Urquhart. Roy Ellery 3rd shot on 3 / 12 went to Jeoff Turner who just nudged out Danny Mortison… which created a loud cheer in the clubroom.

The Barry Robbie Mars Bar & Porcelain Cup went to lady Veteran Kate Brims. Just as you never ask a lovely woman her age, so shall her score remain a mystery to all. Well done Kate and we love having you around.

The ball rundown went on forever to 13 players on 35 points or better.

The mystery card draw was won by Gold Coast visitor, Matt Williams and Bill the Bandit. Matt was greatly impressed with the Iluka Golf Club and the Veterans competition, especially the shotgun start which enabled such good fellowship after the game.

Hope you all had a Happy Easter and great golfing.
