Iluka Croquet…back on the lawns after break

Play resumed in earnest on the weekend with over 20 players on the lawn for most of Friday and a similar number on Sunday. Most of those attending were a bit rusty but some of our keenest players had a game at Coutts Crossing the week before and showed the benefits of that outing. Twilight croquet was washed out on Friday when some solid showers came by the club after 3pm but by then most had had enough after a big lunch put on by our club to launch the season. Thanks go to club captain Bernice and her committee ladies Chris and Jan for putting on a wonderful spread. We had enough leftovers to do the same on Sunday. I brought back four new mallets from a Sydney supplier and already three are sold. Two more are available to be assembled to meet your weight requirements. We were fortunate to have two visitors from Byron Bay club who were only too happy to share their skills and knowledge as they mixed with our players. Thanks Lee and Jane. Hope to see you again soon. On Friday one of our novices Alana Alexander won all three games she played and is improving every outing. Jim Wride and his partner Teresa Collins had a 6-0 win over their opponents. On Sunday our two committeemen Darcy and Don (the terrible D’s) combined for a 6-0 win over their opponents in the first match of the day. So did Rolly and Bee in a later game while yours truly and Bee went through the day without a loss. Names are being taken for a visit to Ballina on February 22, which will show you what a ‘fast’ lawn is really like. Ours is a bit heavy after all the top dressing but because our lawn is not full size things should balance out well. A newsletter will be out soon after our committee meeting on Wednesday.
