I don’t want to teach online

Maclean High School teachers Matt and Tania Fisher have put their creative talents towards producing a music video that explores the teachers’ experiences and desires as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Posted on the school’s Facebook page, the video is tagged: “We’ve been away, we’ve been creative, we miss our students…”

The song, which is based on 1980s hair band White Snake’s Here I go Again, is sung by Tania, who also penned the lyrics; the video stars “dedicated Maclean High School staff”.

“It was a combined effort,” Tania says, “all of the staff got behind it; it was a big team effort.

“It got really weird once people started withdrawing from school … spirits dropped.

“And it got really weird teaching online and, in a room, as well.

“We wanted to keep people’s spirits high; we prefer to be face to face and were missing the kids.”

Tania says that “support from parents” has been outstanding during this difficult time; “we actually love our jobs”.

Matt says the video was a way of “spreading the joy [of teaching] and putting a smile on people’s faces when there are not many around”.

“We are looking forward to kids coming back to school, hopefully in week three,” he says.

At a technical level, Matt says the song was recorded by Paul Agar in one take at Heaven Recording Studios in Yamba.

“It took two weeks to gather footage and close to three full days to edit it,” he says.

Matt is the head teacher of creative and performing arts; Tania is the head maths teacher.
