Have your say on a beach name in Ballina LGA

The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Ballina Shire Council to name a beach in the suburb of East Ballina as Gawandii Beach.

Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said feedback is being sought on the proposal to name Gawandii Beach.

The beach is adjacent to Hill Street at the northern end of Missingham Bridge. Gawandii is the Indigenous word for Dolphin, which has a strong connection to the location and was identified through community consultation with JALI Aboriginal Land Council and the local community.

Mrs Underwood said the board is encouraging community comment before it considers the proposal.

“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” she said.

“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”

Details of the proposal can also be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website at https://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/

Alternatively, email submissions can be sent to ss-gnb@customerservice.nsw.gov.au or written submissions may be lodged with the Secretary Geographical Names Board 346 Panorama Avenue Bathurst NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is 3 July 2020.
