Harwood bridge works to limit boaties access
The Harwood Bridge lift span will be closed until June as maintenance work continues on the iconic structure.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said work started on the northern side of the 50-year-old steel truss bridge in late January, and was now to begin on the middle section, affecting operation of the lift span.
“Work involves patch painting to remove corrosion from the bridge, which is due to a combination of salt water from the Clarence River, sea breeze and other factors,” the spokesperson said.
“The lift span closure is to Friday, June 9, weather permitting, and is only expected to impact recreational boat users.”
Roads and Maritime Services has stated it would continue to work closely with the harbour master to ensure river users were aware of the changed conditions.
Work on the entire project is on track to be complete in November this year, weather permitting.
