Happy Paws Haven Update

We have an excellent cat team, but our dog volunteers are intermittent due to many factors mainly Covid. I have had to take my business operations hat off and pick up water buckets, food buckets, poo buckets and all sorts of other buckets to do the dogs. The boys doing the renovating were busy elsewhere so we did not progress much with the renovations either, although the home-yard dogs did find a way into the building area, leaving their paw marks everywhere. We have two cabins in the home yard that have not been used recently. So we started to renovate them to see what will be involved and give us an indication of total cost per cabin. We built them all 10 years ago now.. We are about to launch a campaign to help us fund this project. We are estimating approximately $3000 per cabin. Some of the cabins need some of the gal replaced due to rust, others will need painting inside and applying antirust/gal where required. We will need crusher dust to fill any dog holes that have been dug under the cabin slabs. We have 12 cabins to renovate; we also need to do some work on the container block of 4 and ISO as well. The cattery is starting to show its age as well, and some of the gal railing needs replacing due to rust, finally we need to finish the outside cat enclosure.

With the bushfire season just round the corner, we are making sure both houses are clear of debris, gutters are clean, pumps are primed and ready etc.

We also need to build a shed to house all the equipment we need to access quickly due to evacuating the animals for any reason. We have serviced the fire pump, checked hoses etc. but need to house the crates, cages, food bowls and buckets, litter trays etc. in readiness including PPE for the volunteers and first aid kit in readiness for a quick move. Last year we nearly had to move, it was cancelled when the wind changed, the year before we were evacuated to Trenyar.

We urgently need volunteers and it is very easy to be socially distanced from others here as we are working with animals. We have ensured that the tasks are split up into single areas for each person. We urgently need help especially with the dogs and with cleaning and maintaining their yards and cabins.  We would like to put together a working bee to tidy up Happy Paws Haven, it is far to bigger job for one person. We also desperately need some men to help with maintenance and to help refurbish our dog kennels.

Rescues and Surrenders

We are trying to limit the number of animals being rescued as you know! Our restrictions are not only financial but also due to vet availability for the non-urgent work such as desexing, as well as our need to restrict capacity to keep our numbers down. We have had one new surrender this week, we have bought a Belgian Shepherd in from Queensland. He is lovely to humans but not keen on male dogs. We also have two greyhounds coming in who have been retired from racing by a local trainer. Our numbers are still down. Including these three new dogs our numbers of animals on site are: 33 dogs and 40 cats giving us a total of 73 animals which is the lowest we have ever been.

Cats and Kittens for adoption this week:

We get all cats vet checked prior to adoption to make sure that we comply to the standards required by any pet shop. We have adopted out well over 1200 cats over the last 12 years and only a very very small percentage having developed any illness as a result of the change in environment but now we are being extremely careful. All our animals are microchipped, immunised and desexed as soon as possible after they arrive. Our Rehoming number is 251000043

Aleta was bought to us early last year, she had just had kittens and was found by a homeless person who could not look after her although she tried. Aleta was a very young mum, she and her family went straight to a foster home where they were very well looked after. Aleta is a quiet very loving affectionate beautiful young cat. She has been desexed microchipped, immunised, regularly wormed and de-flead. 900079000382752

Kimi came to us with her mother and 4 siblings early in 2017. Her mother was found on a vacant property with no form of identification and no one knowing where she came from so we called her Kinki as she had a kink in her tail and some of the offspring do too! Kimi is a beautiful black and white teenage girl who has come from a lovely extremely affectionate family. She is gentle loving active very playful but can be quiet young cat who has been desexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped ready for her new home as are her whole family. 991003000002520

Riva is a member of Rianne beautiful litter 5 kittens. Four are torti girls and Rico who has already got a home the only boy. We were called to the aboriginal community in Maclean early last year they were having a problem with some community cats who were continually breeding and their kittens. All the queens were pregnant again and they just did not know what to do. So we caught all the kittens and the queens put them into foster care and then got them all desexed. We returned all but one of the queens after they were desexed and kept all the kittens. The queen we kept Rianne is a lovely black fluffy young lady very affectionate demanding loves cuddles happy to be stroked and picked up just a very beautiful loving cat as are her beautiful children. They are all desexed microchipped and immunised now ready for their new homes. 991001000624562

Dogs for adoption for this week:

We get all dogs vet checked prior to adoption to make sure that we comply to the standards required by any pet shop. All our animals are microchipped, immunised and desexed as soon as possible after they arrive. All dogs are also tested to make sure that they do not have heart worm. We have rescued and adopted out well over 1300 dogs over the last 12 years. Our Rehoming number is 251000043

Blink is an adult, a special young man who came as a slightly shy Australian Cattle Dog. The people who surrendered him originally, their circumstances had changed and no longer had the time he needed. They were both working full time and Blink was starting to get into mischief. He loves playing ball but sometimes gets over excited and a little rough. He is extremely smart and needs to be mentally stimulated; he also needs consistent rules and boundaries with a firm but fair hand. He needs to feel secure as he has anxiety issues so needs a very special home, preferably at this stage without children. He seems fine with all the dogs we have introduced him to so far. He is a little cautious with humans until he gets to know you and can be very wary of men which makes us wonder if during sometime in his lift he may have been abused. Blink would be great at rallyo, obedience, herding, scenting, tracking and anything that requires a very smart dog as that is exactly what he is. He can also be very protective of his yard and human. He has been desexed microchipped and immunised. 953010002009360

Dixon is a part of this year’s D-Team, they came in towards the end July. The young couple was having trouble coping, she was pregnant and they already had 4 un-desexed dogs of their own and just could not afford to look after the pups and they did not have the space for them too. Due to too many pups, poor nutrition, lack of space and sunlight, these pups were in a bad way. They had trouble walking, their ribs and hip bones showing and their tummies bloated due to worms. They could not afford to get them all chipped, wormed or immunised to rehome them. Dr Ray checked them not long after they arrived; we treated them with high quality food, colostrum, Panacur for the worms, Vitamin C, and space to learn to play in the sun. They are now all very happy healthy, playful, affectionate pups and everyone is surprise in the change that has taken place. We now only have 4 left due to their lovely natures. They are of course desexed, chipped, vaccinated and treated for all the normal parasites as all our animals are. 991003000593891

Kevin came with his brother from a trainer near Casino. Their owner and trainer is elderly, has retired so to help him out we volunteered to take two of his beautiful boys. Like all greyhounds they love to have a play and zoom first thing in the morning and later in the afternoon. In between they prop and stop becoming couch potatoes. These two young men are well behaved, quiet, affectionate, gentle loving dogs. They would be very suitable as a companion to anyone regardless of their age and wellbeing. They are great pets for anyone with a bad back as you don’t need to bend down to groom them or give them a stroke or a gentle pat. They should not be homed with small animals but they love humans. They love being around humans and are low maintenance dogs as they do not require much exercise. They have been desexed, immunised and have a micro-chip. They also have been wormed and treated for all our common parasites. 956000008689292
