The long anticipated final of the 2017 Major Pairs Championship the seasoned combination of Greg Johnson and Martyn Wood and the ‘Dynamic Duo’ of Dave Atkinson and Alan Turnbull was played on Wednesday, April 12. Dave and Alan had answered many challenges on their path to the final, defeating many favoured combinations in the process. The question around the club was whether their vein of rich form could continue and take them all the way to the mantle of the club’s premier pair’s combination? The final hurdle that Dave and Alan need to clear was the experienced and talented team of Greg Johnson and Martyn Woods who had also defeated several more fancied teams on their way to the final. It was important for Dave and Alan to start the match well and place pressure upon Greg and Marty if they were to make the game a true contest; however Greg and Martyn were aware of the strategy and countered with their own brilliance to establish an early and dominant lead that they never surrendered. Although conditions were not conducive to high quality lawn bowls, Greg Johnson and Martyn Wood surprised all in attendance with their consistent control of the game, repeatedly having multiple bowls in the head forcing Alan to play weighted shots seeking miracle outcomes that never eventuated. Dave Atkinson and Alan Turnbull did not bowl poorly it was just a matter of Greg and Martyn bowling much better. The final result was a dominant and well-deserved win to Greg Johnson and Martyn Woods who will now represent the club in the Champion of Club Champions Pair’s Championship to be contested later in the year.
