Grafton’s swimming minstrel returns

Several reasons caused a drop in attendance last week, but it was encouraging to see that those competing were adhering correctly to all Covid rules.

We welcomed the wandering minstrel (Jenny Vickery) back to swimming again after a few weeks absence and it was pretty obvious that she had kept up her training as she managed to reach two finals, the first being the 25m freestyle where she was up against Richard Sear, Damien O’Mahony and David Moon.

“Marno” was first to cover the distance, just touching out “Moony” by .29.

However, a check on times indicated breaks of .25 and .06 for these two so first place went to “Searsy” and “Bubbles”, only .03 further back took third place.

In the 50m final, it was no surprise to see Yvonne Shorrock’s name once again on the list along with Jenny Vickery, Geoff Simkus and Terry Marsh.

Handicaps ranged from two to seventeen in this event so swimmers were heading for home before the field bunched up.

Yvonne put in a tremendous finish and touched just ahead of Terry and a check on times had them cementing these positions. Geoff was placed third.

The Wykes Tyrepower Cup was up for grabs in the B B & B final and on the blocks were Gary Dixon, Richard Sear, Geoff Simkus and David Moon.

So keen were the lads to pick up this trophy that they swam themselves out of contention; yes, Richard, Gary and Geoff all busted their times with breaks ranging from 1.34 to .18 being noted.

David, swimming 13.37 off a nominated 14 was awarded the trophy.
