Grafton Veterans play Clayden Shield

One inter-club event which has escaped recent notice was the annual Veterans Clayden Shield, hosted this year by the Glen Innes Golf Club. This particular series has been a significant part of our Veterans Golf programme since first introduced in 1994. In all that time, Neil & Judy Clayden have been the sponsors of the series contested by Grafton, Glen Innes, Tenterfield, Inverell and Deepwater Golf Clubs. Winners of the 2016 Clayden Shield was the team from the host club, Glen Innes, followed by Tenterfield, Grafton, Inverell and finally Deepwater Golf Club. Grafton’s leading players on the day were Tony Pidcock with 38 points, from Don Skarrett with 35pts, Matt Tully was next best on 34pts. A reasonably successful challenge from the Grafton contingent. Following last Saturdays 2BBB event, 16 pairings have qualified for the 2016 T.G.I.F. 2BBB Knockout. It was no real surprise that the Bill Newman & Jim Cross combination were the leading qualifiers, winning the Murray’s Bobcats sponsored event with a score of 47 points. There were 7 pairings who finished with the 46 points at the completion of the required countback the combinations of Michael Beehag & Graeme Smith, Paul Ensby & Tony Cavanagh were declared the runner up and 2nd runner up winners respectively and obviously in the field for the knockout. Teams with a score of 43 pts or better secured themselves a Pro-Ball for their efforts. If you are one of those qualifiers the 1st Round matches must be completed no later than 9th July. This coming Saturday, the final event of this years 53rd running of the Annual Ladies May Tournament will be held, and as usual will take the form of a mixed American Foursomes sponsored by A C Small Maxwell & Co. Nominations for this event are very strong, however a small number of vacancies remain. Should you want to be part of this event it would be advisable to get your names in urgently. Groups are made up of 6 players, should you not have a partner for the event, organisers will do their best to arrange one for you and secure a place in the field. That event will be followed on the next Saturday, 4th June, with the June Monthly Mug, on this occasion be sponsored by City Centre Apartments. On Sunday 5th June a mixed competition is scheduled and will be played under 2BBB format. Entries for both these competitions are now open. Ray Hopwood
