Grafton Services bowlers remember a real ‘Character’

Saturday November 6 was an important day on the calander for the members of the G.D.S.C. Mens Bowling Club.

This was the day our club remembered one of our club’s real ‘characters’ of past years in Chris Bennett, who we sadly lost, late in 2017.

This annual day was generously sponsored by Chris’ brother Joe Bennett of ‘Penrith Air’ in Sydney, Clarence Valley Council and the G.D.S.C. Thank you for your support, as these carnivals just cannot happen without you.

Unfortunately, Joe Bennett who has regularly joined us in past years was unable to attend this year.

Initially, due to Covid restrictions, we were forced to restrict entry to teams from our own G.D.S.C. Bowling Club, however some restrictions were lifted just in time for us to except extra entries from outside our LGA and we thank those teams for their support. In the end we had twenty teams entered and a successful carnival was assured.

The format for the day was three games of sixteen ends, two bowl triples. Each team received 20 points for each win, and one point for each end won in each game. In the event of a tie, margins would decide the placings.

At the conclusion of the third game, the placings were as follows:

1st – K. Blanch, J. Brooks, F. Gilmore (Wooli composite side); 2nd – M. Cook, B. Hall, T. McDonald (G.D.S.C.); 3rd – B. Buckley, B. Gaarstead, R. Power (G.D.S.C.); 4th – B. Tierney, C. Dalton, T. Dalton (G.D.S.C.); 5th – P. Gillespie, M. Hall, B. Williams (G.D.S.C.); 6th – J. Blanchard, C. Clarke, K. Garner (G.D.S.C.).

The three round winners were:

Round 1 – R. Woodward, J. Ashenden, I.  Knox (South Grafton R.S.L.); Round 2 – N. Henwood, B. Napper, K. Ainsworth (G.D.S.C.); Round 3 – M. Proud, S. Bailey, D. Lindner (Park Beach).

On Wednesday November 3 we had 36 players for our social pairs, with the winners on the day being A. Morrison & J. Pye; runners up went to G. Mallison & C. Clarke, while our consolation prize went to N. Payne & R. Ulrick.

The two resting touchers went to A. Morrison & J. O’ Shea.

On Friday November 5 we had 32 players for our social pairs with the winners on the day going to M. Hall & J. Moerenhout; runners up were M. Cook & R. Piggott, while our consolation prize went to T. Glass & L. Bassett.

Also, a reminder to members there is a list on the notice board for our joint men’s/ladies Christmas Party & Presentation night on the December 4 at 6pm. Cost is $25 per head, due prior to the party. RSVP by November 28. Contact Alan Gough or Toni Shorten for details or put your names on the list.

Entries are also still being excepted for our Mixed Pairs Championship, so enter ASAP.

Good bowling everyone, and we’ll see you on the greens soon at the G.D.S.C.
