Grafton Rifle Club 400 Yards

For the second consecutive week the weather was somewhat benign with just a gentle breeze that must have been changing as the competitors’ scores were a little below par. Only four (4) possibles were recorded, with 2 possibles scored by the Target Rifle discipline (i.e. Open Sights) – Chris McKenzie with 4 centrals and Nick Abrahall with 3 centrals, both scoring 50/50 in their first visit to the firing point. In the F Class (Scoped Rifles) Sue Bloomer scored 60/60 with 6 super centres in her second visit to the mound. John Black also managed a possible 60/60 with 5 super centres in his first visit to the mound. In the Target Rifle division the Grafton Shopping World Butchery Off Rifle trophy, Nick Abrahall continues to show his good form by scoring 99/100 with 7 central bulls to count out Phil Donoghue, Dennis Hilton and Chris McKenzie on 98/100. The ever consistent John Black took out the GSWB Off Rifle trophy with a score of 118/120 with 8 super centres to beat Sue Bloomer by 1 point, with Dave Grundy a further 3 points in arrears. The Daily Aggregate trophy, which includes a handicap earned over the previous 4 visits to the Club and is added to the Off Rifle score, was once again won by Phil Donoghue with a score of 98/100, plus his handicap of 4 points, giving him a total of 102.0 to pip Chris McKenzie on 100.5. For the second week in a row, the F Class Daily Aggregate trophy was won by Scott Murdoch with an Off Rifle score of 111/120 plus handicap of 11.5 points, giving him a total of 122.5, to pip Sue Bloomer’s score of 117/120 with her given handicap of 3.5, giving her a total of 120.5, with John Black a further 1 point behind. On Wednesday last week close friends and fellow target shooters attended the ‘celebration of life’ of an icon of the shooting fraternity – the widely respected Reginald Alfred Rowlands, formerly of the Central Western Club of Lyndhurst and of late a member of Grafton Rifle Club. Target shooters from Sydney, Lyndhurst and Brisbane were in attendance to show their respects for a true champion who not only shot for NSW State teams but represented Australia all over the world. His ability to understand both competitors and weather conditions saw him in a coaching/mentoring position with many successes. Grafton Rifle Club wishes his wife Leonie and his children the Club’s condolences. Next week we will be competing from the 500 yards mound and we welcome visitors and prospective members. The range is located 434 Trenayr Road, Trenayr adjacent to the Experiment Farm and opposite Koppers Logs. Competition commences at 1315 hours with a target draw at 1300 hours. Ian Griffiths
