Grafton lady golfers prepare for May Tournament

Last Saturday’s monthly medal competition fielded 18 starters. A sudden quick downpour during the morning did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players, particularly junior player Courtney Fuller who returned a great 69 nett to come in as the day’s winner as well as receiving the March Medal. Courtney also won the putting with 28 putts. Shirley Goodger continued with her good form to be awarded 2nd spot with 71 on a c/b from Cheryl Shanley. Balls went to Marg Manahan, Peg James, Jean Dahl and Margie Hopkins. One player, despite some apparent long driving skills during her round, managed a near record on the par three 6th hole where she recorded 19 hits. The usual medal round lunch in the clubhouse, from Birdies on Bent, for those that stayed after the game, finished off a nice social morning of golf. Friday’s 18-hole Stableford competition accommodated 33 players in the continuing hot and steamy conditions. Queen Marianne Mannell appears to have found her mojo once again as she took her second win for the week with 37pts. Jan Patterson had her first game at home in some time and was rewarded with second place on 33 from Sharyn O’Grady, who has also been taking to the fairways on a Friday, in 3rd place with 32. Liz Fisher, also claimed her 2nd win for the week as the winner of div 2 with 37pts on a c/b from Lorraine McLaughlan and Fran Marshall placed 3rd on 34. Lorraine also took out the NTP on the 17th and Sandra Gleeson received the ball for the NT on the 6th following a draw of the cards. The 2016 Ladies Committee is delighted to welcome on board Liz Smith and trust that she enjoys her time once again on Committee. We thank Liz for her acceptance of the position and know that she will provide to the Committee and our members her valued knowledge and dedication. Last Wednesday’s 18-hole Stableford competition was kindly sponsored by Kate Thomson and Fran Hiatt with Marianne Mannell (35) the delighted winner of the wonderful trophy. Playing conditions for the 60 starters were very tough, with many players struggling on all holes. However, Peg James showed her current good form to return a nice 35pts as the winner of Div 1, Judy McFarlane was 2nd placed on 34 on a c/b from Dot Newton. Carlie McKenzie took the win in Div 2 on 34 from Sonya Baker with 31 on a c/b from Shirley Avery. Div 3 was taken out by Liz Fisher with 33, Gail Knell was 2nd on 32 and Helen Packwood was 3rd on 31. Our Stroke event next Wednesday March 23, will again be kindly sponsored by Tania Clark of Allure Derma Cosmetic Skin Clinic. The day will also incorporate our 2nd Monthly Medal, 1st WGNSW Medal, 1st Captain’s Trophy and Round 2 of the Stephen Donnelly Financial Services Aggregate. With just on 10 weeks to go until our 2016 May Tournament, our Tournament Secretary Mary Katte together with the ladies’ committee are busy getting preparations in hand to ensure that our 53rd May Tournament will be one to remember.
