Grafton Handicraft Minimart celebrates 50 years in August

One of the most widely recognised stores in the community, the Grafton Handicraft Minimart commenced on July 27, 1972, with a meeting of interested local craft persons.

13 members sold their craft under Phyl Holroyd’s unit in Prince Street before the nearby White House was kindly offered for use by the Rev Wells.
This arrangement began on each Saturday from August 26, with goods unpacked and packed up again each day.

Eventually a permanent empty room at 129 Prince St was secured with members providing all the fittings in April 1973.

Due to the increased difficulty with access to the shop because of the stairs, we relocated to our current position at 133 Prince Street in March 1998, which proved to be much more successful.
We currently have 33 members, although in earlier years over 100 craft persons enjoyed membership.

Volunteers run the shop, with a committee of President, Secretary, and a Treasurer.

New members are welcome but must be able to work regularly.

We have had four Presidents, three Secretaries and five Treasurers throughout our 50 years.

One of whom Val Wood, recently turned 100.
Members make quality handmade goods so our customers can be assured of a high standard when making purchases.
Often mothers, grandmothers or third generations of the same family come in time and time again, as well as regular visitors, and our goods are sent worldwide.
Participation in local activities with window displays of Australia Day, Anzac Day and the July Racing Carnival and the Jacaranda Festival has always featured in our shop each year we welcome the Jacaranda Party.
We donate each year to charities, and over the years have given to Far West, Livingstone House, Grafton Meals on Wheels, Ambulance, Community Bus, and Palliative Care and many donations to Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.
Please come and join us as we celebrate our 50 years of trading in August.

You will be most welcome.
