Grafton golf ‘Presidents vs Captains’

Last Wednesday 62 players took part in a shotgun start, for the annual Presidents (North) versus Captains (South) 18 hole Stableford. It was a very good field and the course has started to show a slight greenish tinge after the long winter drought. The President’s team were the winners on the day by the narrowest of margins, with an average of 30.9, to the Captain’s side, with an average of 30.00. The event was sponsored by Heather and Margaret, and the winner for the President’s side was June Cavanagh, with a very good 39 points. Winner for the Captain’s side was Heather Purtill, with 37 points. Heather presented the Cup to President Margaret, who thanked those who played so well for her side. Friday saw 26 starters for an 18 hole Stableford. Scoring was pretty hot on the day, with Gillian McLachlan having 38 points to take the winner’s cheque in Div 1, r/up was Margaret Manahan with 34pts, closely followed by Marianne Mannel on 33, on a c/b. Winner of Div 2 was Roya Smith with 39pts, just tipping Kay Eccleston with 38pts, 3rd place getter was Trish Clark with 35pts. Monday 17th was the finals of the Matchplay Singles Championship. In Div 1, Heather Robinson was to play Noeline Smith; Div 2, Kerry Harding has received a forfeit from Sonya Baker; Div 3 will be fought out between Helen Irving and Marilyn Powell. At going to print I did not have the results of those matches. Monday golfers played a 9 hole competition and I do not have the results of such. Today we play the last signature event on our golfing calendar, the 27 hole Foursomes Championship. There is a large field with 64 competitors, and some very good combinations in both Grades 1 and 2. Sponsors are Jan Hamilton and Mary Katte (nett winners) and we thank them for their continued sponsorship of this event. Friday we play an 18 hole Stableford, and it is also WGNSW 4BBB v Par at District Level at Kyogle. Good luck to those girls representing Grafton, and safe travelling. Saturday is an 18 hole Stableford, and day two of the Ken Casson Aggregate. Saturday players are to note the weekend knock out Round 1 is to be played on or before September 22. There are still vacancies for the interdistrict match at Sawtell on Friday September 26, if you can spare the day to represent your club. If the numbers are right we will be taking the Club bus. Women’s Golf Northern Rivers events coming up are October 8/9/10 a three day tournament at Yamba; Tuesday 16th Teven Open Day; October 26 is our own Grafton Jacaranda Tournament. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Heather for filling in for me, for seven weeks; quite a big ask, and thank you very much. Also ladies, please remember Jan Beattie and Sonya Baker in your prayers, as both are on the sick list. Marg Rickwood
