Our course may have proven more difficult than normal for many of our regular golfers, however that was not the position of our Junior Golfers last Saturday. Playing in the Elgas sponsored 18 hole single Stableford, 13 year old Kayne Endean (23) smashed the field of 117 players with an outstanding 42pts. Although of a very young age, Kayne has the golfing potential to become one of our better junior golfers and at the same time give his more senior opposition some real competition. The next best score for the day was 40pts, recorded by 2 players, Timothy Bartlett (4) winner of A Grade, and Kin Li (11) who took out B Grade. R/up in both grades was Graham Tracey (9) in A Grade with 38. In B Grade Trent Dickson (14) with 36pts was successful. In the other grades, Trevor White (15) had to survive a c/b to defeat Robert Perl (19) with both players recording 37pts. Thirty nine points was the winning score in D Grade, taken out by Maurice Gane with Russell Jones r/up spot on 38. To win a Pro-ball you required a score of 32 or better, on a c/b. With the July races now with us, a couple of important events to consider are almost with us. Firstly the Herron Stakes Day scheduled for next Tuesday. Entries for this event must be completed through a computer system as the normal Tuesday walk up start provision will not apply. A Field of 200 plus is expected so get your names in as early as possible. Following on from that event will be the 36 hole Herron Cup scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, 11th and 12th July. Being one of our feature competitions for the year, will attract a very big field. Therefore it would be to your advantage to nominate early to secure your preferred tee off times for both days. Those players involved in the T.G.I.F. Social Group, your next event is scheduled for Friday 17th July. Players are to assemble at 10.30am for a couple of social drinks and the draw for partners to enable a 11am shot gun start. Refer to the T.G.I.F. notice board for the nomination sheet. Should you have any enquiries refer to Neil Hayward or Bob Smith who have all the answers. The scores may not have been brilliant last Tuesday, but the competition was close with 4 players returning scores of 35 points to lead the 100 starters in the Open Mens and Veterans Tuesday competition. Following a complicated c/b Trevor Gleeson was declared the winner of the Veterans, followed by Athol Green and Warren Moss. In the members competition, Terry Sampson was declared the winner with Trevor Gleeson and Athol Green claiming the two r/up positions. To achieve a Pro-Ball in the Veterans competition you required 31pts or better. In the members competition 30pts or better is all you needed. There was some improvement in the scores in the Thursday competition with 37pts the leading result for the day. Following a c/b, Tim Newsome won the day from Andrew Kelly with both players finishing with 37pts. Next best, and 2nd r/up was Karl Studd on 36pts. Pro-Balls went down to 32pts on a c/b. This coming Saturday we have one of those rare 2BBB events, which has been nominated as the Don Bellamy Memorial Day. As we all know Don was a great supporter of Grafton Golf for many years. Now, Wendy, Jon and Mark Bellamy continue that support in Don’s memory, which is more than appreciated by all of us who play the game. No doubt, due to the significance of the day a almost capacity field will contest the event and as a consequence it would be advisable to get your team nominations in early. Ray Hopwood
