It was a proud and sad moment in time, as a lone piper lead parole officers and staff of the Grafton Correctional Centre out through the gates of the old Grafton Gaol for the last time on Friday, 17 July 2020.
An official retirement ceremony was held at the front entry of the old gaol on Friday and was attended by Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin.
The heritage listed gaol has been operating for the last 127 years and has been the backbone of Grafton and surrounding areas employing many throughout the years.
