Failed by Council

Ed,  During the Christmas & New Year period I suffered the misfortune of having Council declare that my recycling bin was ‘too heavy’. It remained on the side of the road, uncollected. Too heavy? It is the receptacle provided by Council and was only used for the intended purpose, recyclables. I checked inside, to ensure someone hadn’t deposited something inordinate like an engine, and nothing, just the recycling as is the intended purpose. So then I thought, perhaps Council have Santa’s Little Elves picking up the bins and that’s why they do it so early in the morning. Having never been up that early before, I set myself a goal, to catch the Elves the following fortnight… I am aghast, it isn’t Elves at all. The truck has an enormous hydraulic arm that picks up the bins. The driver doesn’t even get out of the truck. So now I am totally confused. How is the receptacle that is provided by Council, when used for the intended purpose, unable to be collected because it’s ‘too heavy’? Someone in Council needs to re-visit the recyclables planning and either provide a receptacle that is fit for purpose or get a bigger truck. After all, as a ratepayer, I pay for this service. The result of this experience is that now all my recycling and rubbish are forced to be mixed across the two bins. Luke Alexander, Ashby
