EPA investigation clears Hutchinson Builders, Lantrak
The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has cleared Hutchison Builders and Lantrack Logistics of any breaches during the remediation of the former South Grafton sewerage treatment plant, the site of Clarence Valley Council’s new depot.
On December 23, 2016, the EPA issued a media release stating that is was “investigating several trucks that were not sealed correctly before transporting waste that potentially contained asbestos”.
Last week the EPA provided the following statement to the Independent: “The NSW EPA continues to monitor the transport of waste from the former South Grafton Sewage Treatment Plant and respond to residents’ concerns
“Following an EPA investigation, Hutchison Builders and Lantrack Logistics submitted appropriate documented procedures and plans to the EPA regarding the inspection of all trucks leaving the site and ensuring they meet waste transporting requirements, including appropriate covering of loads potentially contaminated with asbestos.
“The EPA considers that the implementation of these changes to covering loads would improve transportation practices going forward.
“Residents with concerns can contact the EPA’s Environment Line on 131 555
“The EPA is also continuing to monitor overall remediation activities at the Tyson St site.”
For its part, Hutchinson Builders wrote in its January 27 report: “Hutchinson Builders and Lantrak representatives are inspecting all trucks leaving the site.
“Any trucks that are suspect of having tarp malfunctions are required to reverse, unload soil, decontaminate and leave site.
“No trucks are being permitted to leave site that are suspect of air pockets.
“No trucks are permitted to uncover their load at any time after leaving the CVC Depot site, until they reach the registered Swanbank landfill to dump.
“This investigation was closed out by EPA following Hutchinson Builders response.”
