At the conclusion of the Clarence Valley Council (CVC) ordinary meeting on August 27, CVC Mayor Peter Johnstone took the opportunity to address the gallery and extend his sincere thanks and appreciation to CVC General Manager Laura Black, CVC directors, council staff, and his fellow councillors, ahead of the upcoming Local Government Election next weekend.
Mayor Johnstone said every single one of them, at some point or another, has shown him a great deal of kindness, has given him welcomed advice, and has also given him encouragement when needed.
“I really appreciate that,” he said.
Mayor Johnstone went on to acknowledge the three Clarence Valley councillors who are not standing for re-election, including Bill Day, Ian Tiley, and Jeff Smith.
“I’d like to start with you Bill,” Mayor Johnstone said.
“I’ve enjoyed our games of pool and chess, I think we’re fairly even at the moment, but we’ll have some more chances for that.
“I appreciate your kindness, and as I said to you earlier, the emails you’ve sent have kept me laughing when I wouldn’t otherwise be laughing, and I also appreciate that.
“Thank you for coming out of retirement for this council too.”
Mayor Johnstone also acknowledged Deputy Mayor Smith and spoke of how much he enjoyed their cups of coffee together.
“I’ve enjoyed your advice, and for covering me in my absences,” he said.
“I’m sure you will be back in the future, but I have a feeling you’re going to have a lot to do in the community since then.”
While Cr Tiley did not attend the CVC ordinary meeting last week, Mayor Johnstone expressed his gratitude to him for the guidance and support he has extended towards him during his time as Mayor, adding he will miss having the experience from Cr Tiley alongside him.
Mayor Johnstone said he hopes Cr Tiley won’t mind if he gives him the occasional phone call for advice, and paid tribute to his six decades experience in local government.
