The ‘Golf Croquet’ Div 2 Pairs Championship, contested as a round robin, made a good start with some high quality play, including a jump shot by Marilyn Wilson over both the opponents balls.
The team of Ann Williams and Phil Jordan took a big step toward the title, winning first over Joy Campbell and Marilyn Wilson 7-5 and by the same score over Gillian Martin and Royce Wilson. Ken Davison and Tony Williams lost both their matches against Joy Campbell and Marilyn Wilson 7-4 and by the same score to Gillian Martin and Royce Wilson.
While championship matches were played on Lawn 1, Lawn 2 was busy with rapid social play.
Championship matches to date mean that with just two games to play any of four pairs can win by a thumping victory. The only pair which cannot win the championship is that of Ken Davison and Tony Williams.
Saturday’s play was difficult with very strong winds. There were several 7-1 scores and only Narelle Wright and Marilyn Wilson showed form: three wins and a loss each. Bill Gauci was back after a long absence and showed flashes of his old form.
In ‘Ricochet’ the closest result was a very lucky win for Wayne Gadke over Rusty Case with a golden point 11-10. In other games Peter Martin defeated Rusty Case 13-11 and Louise Lowe 13-9, while Wayne overcame Louise 14-6.
The ‘Association Croquet’ Championship round robin continued with wins for Peter Martin over Sue Deeth and for Peter Deeth over Simon Cook. Nobody has yet emerged as a favourite to win.
