Busy time at Grafton golf

Midweek competition

There is no doubting the popularity of midweek golf at the Grafton Golf Club course with really strong fields turning out in both our Tuesday and Thursday competitions. For example, last Tuesday Members/Veterans competition a total of 125 golfers came out to play, revealing not only good numbers taking part, but a high standard of scoring was achieved.

Leading the field home with an impressive round of golf was Mark Hackett, who playing off a handicap of 10 recorded a total of 41pts to be awarded with the majority of prize money on offer in the members competition. With a handy score of 40pts, Koopah Walters (21) claimed the r/up spot, just the single point ahead of a group of four players who finished on 39. They were Alan Wade (21), Steve Houlahan (13), Doug Clark (21) and Danny Pachos (15). At the conclusion of the required countback, it was Alan Wade who secured the 2nd r/up spot in the members competition. The remaining three players with 39 had to be satisfied with a pro ball for their golf. The remaining pro balls were distributed to those on 36 on a countback.

In the Veterans component of the Tuesday competition, three players shared the top three positions on the Veterans leader board with Alan Wade taking the top spot from Steve Houlahan and Doug Clark being recognised as the 1st and 2nd r/up respectively, all three players finishing on 39pts.

Pro balls for the Veterans went down to those on 33.

The Thursday competition was also well represented with 64 players taking up the challenge. Taking out the event was Ben Randell (19) with 42pts from Billy Bishop (12) also with 42. Shannon Connor (11) was awarded the 2nd r/up spot for his 41.

Pro balls going down to those good golfers on 35 against their names.

Weekend competition

The 3rd round of the Lion Tooheys month of golf was completed last Saturday and attracted a field of just under 120 starters. Claiming the overall win was Simon Winwood-Smith, who playing off a then handicap of 30, completed his round with 44pts, 4 points clear of his nearest rivals, Dennis Pye (16) and Matt McKee (scratch), Simon, a relatively new member of the Club will no doubt find that his 30 handicap will be substantially reduced when he next plays.

For his 40 points, Matt McKee was awarded the win in A Grade from the always consistent John Tracey (9) who had to survive the countback process to claim the r/up spot in A Grade with 37.

Two of our more experienced golfers featured in B Grade with Dennis Pye (16) taking out that grade with 40, just the one point clear of Frank Petty (16) on 39.  The 40-points score achieved by Dennis was undoubtedly enhanced by taking out the Pro pin on the 1st with his tee shot finishing just over 2 metres from the pin, the birdie putt remained a little short however made the par putt look easy.

The results in C Grade were very tight with Wayne Creighton (17) and Ron Baker (26) sharing the honours with both players recording 39, Wayne eventually awarded the win following a countback. Matt McKee recorded the only eagle on the day on the 11st, Pro balls going down to those on 34 or better.

Next Saturday’s competition will be a single Stableford, which will be the 4th round of the Lion/Tooheys month of golf as well as round 7 of the Bendigo Bank Summer Consistency Trophy. The final round of that series scheduled for the following weekend.
