You only have a week to register and join the Sea of Red for Cystic Fibrosis in the 2024 Brooms to Bowlo charity walk.
Launched in 2008 to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research and support, the annual 23km walk from Brooms Head to Yamba has seen thousands of participants raise a remarkable $90,460.75 for CF since its inception.
This year participants can choose to either walk the 23km or spend a fun-filled day at Yamba Bowling Club enjoying games of barefoot bowls, croquet, live music, complimentary lunch and drinks, while supporting a charity that aims to help children “breathe easier”.
The ambassador for this year’s walk is 14-year-old Chloe Edwards, an inspirational local girl living with CF whose family have raised more than $40,000 for CF since 2012.
Chloe, who was diagnosed at birth said CF is an inherited life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system.
CF affects the cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices, causing these fluids to become thick and sticky, plugging up tubes, ducts, and passageways.
There are more than 2000 known gene mutations that can cause CF.
For the first 12 years of her life, Chloe’s family was unable to afford hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for medication, but a breakthrough came for the family around 12 months ago when the groundbreaking drug Trikafta was included on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme PBS.
In the past year since taking the medication, Chloe told the CV Independent her quality of life had improved drastically.
“Since I started on Trikafta I don’t have to do my physio routines that I normally had to do and I haven’t been on antibiotics or been sick for the past 12 months, it’s been life-changing,” she said.
“Without the help of charity events like this raising money for CF research life-changing drugs like Trikafta wouldn’t have been put on the PBS.”
After completing the 23km walk in 2023 with her mother Kate, who has participated in the annual CF charity walk since 2008, Chloe said she was looking forward to this year’s event.
Join Chloe’s family, friends, and hundreds of other participants on Sunday, August 4, and register now for the walk, sponsored by Raine and Horne Maclean, Yamba, Iluka, and the Yamba Bowling Club.
The cost is $80 to register for the walk for adults and $30 for children up to 16 years old.
If you choose not to walk the 23km, people of all ages can enjoy barefoot bowls, croquet, live music, a free lunch and drinks, at the Yamba Bowling Club for $30.
Registration for the 2024 walk closes on Wednesday July 24.
