Brooms Head Family Sports Day

Lynne Mowbray This year’s king tide on New Year’s Day, delayed the start of the Lions Club of Maclean, annual Family Sports Day at Brooms Head. The scheduled 10am start was put back 40 minutes to allow the tide to drop enough to utilise the beach for the popular Brooms Head boat races. Competitors of all ages were keen to participate in an array of fun beach events including the family group relay, boat races, beach sprints, Brooms Head (Broom) throw, novelty events and the Tug-of War. Lions Club president Laurie Fitzpatrick said that he was happy with this year’s event. “Despite the late start to this year’s event, it was a very successful day,” said Mr Fitzpatrick. “The Tug-of War in particular, proved to be very competitive. “A lot of people congratulated the Lions Club, on the running of this year’s event. “The donation buckets manned by the Gulmarrad RFS at the entry to the Brooms Head village, raised $1600. “So it was a very successful day at the Broom,” he said.
