Big River Sailing Club attracts large fleet

In what was the best turnout this season, 16 boats contested the latest heats of the Club Championship Series held last Saturday. In contrast to the generally wet and erratic conditions of the previous month, the sun was out and the breeze held in for the duration, allowing the majority of boats to complete the two race program and enjoy some closely contested racing.

Rick Chalmers in his Nacra 4.5 was able to hold the other multihulls at bay and score a pair of wins in Div 1, whilst Mark Mulligan and Wayne Culph shared the honors in Div 2. Emma Robertson led the junior division with a couple of narrow wins over other Laser 4.7 sailor Hendrix Mahoney.

The strong showing follows an impressive 70 entrants for the Club’s Annual Regatta held on the previous weekend. The regatta was the last of the major events in this season’s calendar and typically attracts competitors from north of Brisbane to the Central Coast. The single handed Impulse Class and the two handed Heron Class dominated the monohull division, with the former class also incorporating its Eastern States Championships into the regatta. In a very close affair, class stalwart Mark Brown eventually won the title over David Harrison. The Heron is steeped in Australian sailing history and is the perfect family dinghy, often sailed by a combination of parent and young child. Always near the top end of the fleet, the Vaiciurgis family finished first and third, with the Nosworthy family second.
