Be fire safe and secure during the summer holidays

Fire and Rescue NSW is encouraging holidaymakers to stay safe while travelling during the summer holidays, especially if they are planning to hit the road with their caravans in tow or take a drive in their motorhomes.

A spokesperson for Fire and Rescue NSW said its important to go through a safety checklist prior to commencing your journey, starting with the installation of a working smoke alarm in all caravans and motorhomes.

“Keep a fire extinguisher and fire blanket near the exit (of your caravan or motorhome, and make sure you remember to turn off gas bottles and check fittings,” they said.

“Pack a portable radio so you can tune in for bushfire updates and turn off non-essential electrics and batteries.

“Its also important to have a fire escape plan and make sure everyone understands it.”

Fire and Rescue NSW is also reminding holidaymakers to be fire safe by following these safety guidelines:

  • Always build campfires a safe distance from your caravan or motorhome.
  • Always fully extinguish campfires before going to sleep.
  • Never leave matches or lighters around children.
  • Keep looking when cooking and practice safe outdoor cooking.
  • Only charge devices on hard surfaces, never on your bed.
  • Avoid smoking or using candles inside a caravan or motorhome.
  • Clear all exits of obstructions.

If a fire starts, get out, stay out and dial 000 (Triple Zero), and use the Hazards Near Me app to keep up to date on any nearby bushfires or floods if you are heading off grid.
