Basset produces a stellar performance to claim Maiden Major Singles

GDSC Major Single to Leith Basset

Saturday March 26 saw our Major Singles Championship for 2022 reach the climax with our final between Leith Basset and Gary Harrison on the greens at the GDSC.

This promised to be an interesting match, with Gary having qualified for the final for the third time in recent years, and Leith, now playing with a bowling arm, making his first appearance …would Gary’s experience in finals carry him through to his first title?… or would Leith’s “positive attitude” see him take his maiden Major Singles Title?

Leith gained the early advantage, winning six of the first eight ends to lead 10 – 2, and was able to hold this eight-shot advantage to lead 16 – 8 after 16 ends.

Gary was not about to lie down though and managed to score singles on four of the next six ends, however the margin was still six shots (18 – 12) to Leith.

From that point on it was Leith who showed everyone present, exactly how to, “let your bowling arm do the talking,” as he proceeded to win six of the final seven ends with excellent draw shot bowls, to take the final by eleven shots. Gary, as hard as he tried could only stand back and say, “Well played Leith…too good on the day.”

Final score: Leith Basset 25 d Gary Harrison 14.

Congratulations to Leith on winning his first Major Singles title at the Grafton Services Mens Bowling Club, and commiserations to Gary who as we all know will be back next year to continue his quest for that illusive Major Singles title.
