Barry White takes home the Grafton Herron Cup

At the completion of the 36 hole Coca Cola Amatil and New Oriental Chinese Restaurant, Barry White playing off a handicap of 32, claimed the biggest prize of his golfing career when he won the prestigious Herron Cup with a two sound total of 140 nett (72 & 68). Barry did not have it all his own way, being hard pressed by eventual runner up James Wilks (14) with 141 nett, from an improving Trevor Townsend who finished with a 142 nett. However a strong 68 nett in the Sunday round was what clinched the deserved win for Barry. With rounds of 72 & 74, Greg Harvison (0) was the winner of the gross component of the 36 hole tournament, claiming the Grafton Bowl for the very first time, which is a little surprising, considering his outstanding golfing career spanning over many years. Runner up to Greg was defending Grafton Bowl Champion Matt McKee (2) who finished with 147 gross. Matt claiming that trophy previously both in 2014 and 2015. For a complete run down of all the winners from the two days refer to the official score sheets in the Club House. Plenty of golf happening on this coming weekend, commencing with the annual Legacy Day on Saturday, which will take the form of a 18 hole single Stableford. That event will be followed on Sunday with the 27 hole 2016 mixed foursomes championships with trophies provided by Grafton Golf Club. Entries are open, and will be played in groups of 6 players. Not long now, before we embark on the 2016 Club Championships, as in past years, co-sponsored by Greg Harvison Building and Design together with Jacaranda City Coaches (David & Leanne Morgan). The first round of these championships are scheduled for Saturday 6th August and will incorporate the August Monthly Mug, sponsored by Craig Woods Plumbing. It does not seem like 12 months since the last Holden Scramble qualifier, but that is the circumstance with that particular event scheduled for Saturday 20th August. As in past years a double shot-gun start will be employed with tee off times scheduled for 7.30am and 12.30pm. Ken Casson Holden are the sponsors of this event with nominations to open next week. Therefore it would be appropriate to organise your teams now. For those Veteran Golfers who missed out on their normal Tuesday competition this week, due to the WGNR Ladies Tournament being hosted by our Club, that regular competition has been rescheduled to this Thursday (21st July). The competition will be held in conjunction with the Monthly Tallowood Challenge which is played under the Stroke form of golf. As normal it will be a walk up start and is a good opportunity to contest a mid week stroke event, as an alternative to the normal stableford which applies to Veterans Golf. Normal mid week competitions will resume next week. Ray Hopwood
