Highly acclaimed North Coast author Shirley Walker will present two events at the Sir Earle Page Library and Education Centre in Grafton next week. Memories of the Clarence: in conversation with Shirley Walker at 4pm on Tuesday, April 5, will be a discussion about daily life and special events along the Clarence River. This is an inter-generational event and adults and interested teenagers/children are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be available. A lunchtime talk the following day will give Shirley a chance to talk about her books Roundabout at Bangalow and The Ghost at the Wedding. Regional librarian, Kathryn Breward, said the author’s more recent book The Ghost at the Wedding was a moving story about life on the Clarence River last century. “Tales of the young men who left the valley to serve in the first and second world wars are interwoven with stories of the women who continued to live their everyday life on the river,” she said. Shirley had a substantial academic career in Australian literature at the University of New England and has deep family roots in the Clarence Valley. Her literary works are written as a memoir, as true stories in the form of a novel.
